Solar Installation
Community School, Nar, Skardu

Location: Nar Village, Outskirts of Skardu City
System Installed: 1.2 kV Solar Panel System
Beneficiaries: 204 Female Students (Early Years – Grade 10)

Community Profile

Nar Village consists of approximately 370 households and is situated in a remote part of Skardu, where government infrastructure is limited and access to resources is minimal. Despite these challenges, the community’s proactive approach in seeking support reflects their strong desire for quality education.

Project Background

Nar Community School, located approximately 30 minutes by road from Skardu city, serves 204 female students from early years through to Grade 10. The school is entirely run by community-appointed teachers, reflecting strong local ownership and commitment to education.

However, like much of Gilgit-Baltistan, Nar faces two major challenges:

  1. A severe shortage of qualified teachers, and
  2. Unreliable electricity supply, with long and frequent outages.

To address the lack of teaching staff, the school sought to incorporate e-learning as a solution. A local NGO generously donated 10 desktop computers, but the school lacked the infrastructure to power them consistently.

Our Intervention

To support this initiative, Braldu Valley Foundation installed a basic 1.2 kV solar power system at the school. This installation ensures:

  • Reliable power supply for digital learning, even during grid outages.
  • The ability for students to access digital educational content and basic computer literacy.
  • Support for teachers by enabling them to use e-learning tools and multimedia resources in the classroom.

This solar installation not only enables tech-based learning for over 200 girls, but also stands as a model for how small, sustainable energy solutions can overcome systemic educational barriers in remote regions.
